You get live view and alerts for free, but cloud recording costs £2.50 a month for 60 days of event recording.

The camera records up to 1080p video and has a wide 270-degree field of view, digital zoom and night vision, and you can talk through the camera via the app. The lights can be turned on manually too. The camera is weatherproof and comes with two-year theft protection, in case someone is brazen enough to unscrew it from your wall. Not that the foxes invading my back garden paid any attention to either. You can also configure whether to trigger the floodlights, and there’s a loud siren built into it for good measure. You can set motion zones, filter alerts by size of object or just people, the time of day or day of the week. You can activate a live stream at any time through the app, but it’s the motion-activated smart alerts that are the main draw. Once that hurdle is overcome, setup is straightforward using the Ring app on a smartphone or tablet. Larger and more capable than its battery-driven siblings, the Floodlight Cam comes in black or white but requires wiring into the mains, most probably by an electrician. The Ring Floodlight Cam combines, as the name might suggest, two articulated LED floodlights and a camera in one device, which make it perfect for replacement of traditional security lights in the back garden.

Mini-USB Port The mini-USB port allows you to charge your Li-ion battery, as well as update the MIOPS's firmware. The MIOPS trigger can be used with multiple cameras (not simultaneously) by simply changing the camera connection cable. They are electrically isolated from each other, reducing risk of a short circuit. Triggering Your Camera and Flash MIOPS has two dedicated outputs, one for a flash, and another for a camera. For example, you can set the MIOPS to start taking timelapse photos only after it detects lightning.

Combining Sensors You can combine sensors with MIOPS's Scenario feature by creating a custom scenarios with up to five different steps. External Port A port on the MIOPS can accept any external trigger that has an output signal between 0V and 3V, such as a temperature, pressure, or humidity sensor. HDR Mode Even if your camera doesn't have a bracketing feature, MIOPS allows you to set a center exposure, as well as the over and under exposures needed in order to make an HDR image. The LCD screen will turn off to save energy, allowing you to take a timelapse photo for days, or even months if you use an external power source. Timelapse Mode This mode lets you specify the interval time anywhere between one second and one hour, as well as how many photos to take. You can adjust the delay of the trigger as well as the sensitivity of amount of sound needed to trigger the shutter. Sound Mode MIOPS's built-in microphone can detect sound, triggering your camera or flash to capture things like breaking glass, or a popping balloon. This is useful for detecting subjects such as water drops, animals, or intruders when conducting surveillance. Laser Mode The MIOPS has a built-in sensor to detect when a laser beam is broken, thereby triggering your camera's shutter. This mode can also be used to capture fireworks, or other events where you need to capture images based on changes in light.

You can capture only bright lightning strikes, or the smallest strikes, simply by adjusting the sensitivity. Lightning Mode A built-in light sensor detects changes in light and triggers your camera's shutter in just a few nanoseconds.
